About the Book
In Cuban Literature in the Age of Black Insurrection: Manzano, Plácido, and Afro-Latino Religion, Matthew Pettway presents an essential reframing of the lives and works of two renowned Afro-Cuban writers, reconnecting their writing with the African Atlantic context from which it should never have been disconnected.
About the Author
Matthew Pettway is an assistant professor of Spanish at the University of South Alabama. Pettway has published articles in PALARA (Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association), Zora Neale Hurston Forum, American Studies Journal, and Del Caribe in addition to entries in The Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography. He also contributed the inaugural essay to the volume Black Writing, Culture, and the State in Latin America.

CANDELA (Cuban American Narratives & Dialogue for Equity, Liberation, and Allyship) is a virtual book club based out of Miami, FL. Co-founded by Leilani Bruce and Daniela Carolina Roger, CANDELA aims to bring attention to issues related to race and Afro-Cuban experience in the Cuban and Cuban American communities through diving into books and films that explore Black cuban history and race in Cuba and the Cuban American community.
