The Southeast has recently been devastated by Hurricane Helene, particularly through massive flooding in the mountain region on the Tennessee/North Carolina border. Major utilities and infrastructure were knocked out along with homes, businesses, and farms.
We have made contact with an agricultural education friend, Mr. Buddy Crass, who calls Johnson County, TN home. He has connected us with community leaders, including a police chief to best direct our efforts. Current status is that, though there is need, many of the items they need (food, water, paper products, etc.) are available significantly closer, if they have monetary support. What they do NOT have available is hay for farmers and livestock. We are collecting hay, large squares preferred but will accept rounds and small squares, and financial support to deliver to Tennessee.
Areas we are directly targeting Washington County (Jonesborough, Lamar, Embreeville, Little Germany, Bumpas Cove, Limestone, Chuckey), Unicoi County (Erwin, Unicoi), Greene County, Carter County, Johnson County in TN. Mitchell County and Yancey County in NC. Our plan is to deliver on November 9th. If you, your school, business, church, club, would like to collect and join us along the route, I am happy to coordinate. Our plan is to head from Central Illinois to Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, and down. If you wish to contribute cash, we will use that cash to purchase additional hay and support transportation. Cash can also be sent directly to the relief fund centered in the Town of Jonesborough to support the entire region. Purchased hay is around $75 for a large square bale, but any level of support is greatly appreciated.
We would love to have you join the effort. Our challenge to you: We are committed to solving the logistics of delivery, please support at a level that makes that challenging.
