Reflections, Onward, Upward, Looking Forward
Burning Man last year was challenging due to the rain, but we thrived in the water—like fish in wet dust do!
The rain offered a significant transformation as we faced the days of rain that shut down the city. One DUSTFISH, Jenn Romantino, or @Burnernurse on TicTok, wrote an article for Newsweek and also shared on News stations in San Francisco; her 2023 experience as a Registered Nurse aiding Burners in medical need, and her perspective on the misinformation that flooded media outlets globally.
We were suddenly faced with a flurry of challenges. In true DUSTFISH fashion, we turned adversity into opportunity, scrambling to ensure our resources would last. And you know what they say about pressure? It either bursts pipes or creates diamonds. In our case, it revealed the resilience and talent of our camp members, with everyone stepping up and contributing in ways that left us all awestruck. We came together as a camp and as a community of artists, showcasing our incredible range of talents in the face of adversity. More than ever, we reaffirmed our mission to stand as a sanctuary for the marginalized in every form. We are not just a camp - we're a testament to resilience, creativity, and inclusive unity in the dust.
Last year, our Earth astronauts, Marie and Karel, traveled with three huge inflated planets made in the Czech Republic from Alaska to playa. Karel designed the graphics for the moon and Mars. The Artery was not interested in placing them on the playa, so we invited them to set up the planets in front of our camp. Hundreds of people came to DUSTFISH, especially at night, because they were light from within. We look forward to the illuminating planetary landmarks return this year.
As we secure placement in the next month, we will update you on the art installations and gifts being shared with our camp.
We are using word of mouth, sharing directly with friends, to promote our camp this year instead of social promotion. Family, friends, and friends of friends provide a more engaged experience with Fishes eager to participate by volunteering for shifts throughout the week.
Additional Updates:
DUSTFISH is in the process of becoming a 501(c)(7)! Yes, it is a social club (membership) for many reasons: credibility, limited liability, tax-exempt status, and deductions for all! We hope to become official in advance of the Burn. We have grown to a point within the last few years where more attention is needed to our finances and governance. More to come.
Do the DUE MEMBERSHIP early, PLEASE: Inflation is real, and this year, our goal is to continue to keep DUSTFISH in the black. We are still building less, but with every year, there is something that inevitably will cost us more. This year, transportation will be more of a challenge; we have more art, more wood more water etc. Plus, we would like to consider purchasing shelter for either the bar or, if affordable, the show must go on stage during downpours.
To help us plan, it will be to our best advantage if camp-membership can be paid as early and soon as possible. Enabling you to secure your spot early allows us to capture advance operational funds to get started. All pricing for water and power has stayed the same; camp dues increased by $25 to $375.
If you would like to attend but are hindered by handing over lump sum amounts, contact Opal at Opalminded@gmail.com and Abena at Abenaadjei@gmail.com to discuss a no-interest, 100% refundable pay-it-in-4 membership payment plan. This is for folks who... you know who you are. It's just a more digestible way to help pay for your Burn, and we are happy to help.
This year, we have
Custom, air-conditioned private Bathroom/Shower trailer
The Stage, Bar, 20Phò7, the Playa beds we know and love, art panels (new)
Not Sk8 Kamp krew (returns!)
The Three Planets (returns!)
Like last year, we will continue funneling all payments through Cheddar Up. No longer can we accommodate accepting membership dues at Burning Man. Minus two spots, we almost reached capacity last year. Remember, your spot in the camp is only secured once you have applied and paid for membership.
