MONDAY PM - DESIGN YOUR OWN BOARD GAME (5 weeks) - In this class students will design the board, the task or question cards, make or decide on playing pieces that relate to the theme, write rules, and explain all aspects of their game to players. This is an activity that uses creativity, organization, sequential thinking, questioning techniques, gathering, and using information on a topic that is the focus of the game. The designer needs to consider the risks the players must take and offer outcomes that are sensible and important to the endgame. The total experience of the game, the story that engages the players will be field tested with classmates and revisions made if necessary. Designing a game is a form of storytelling. Game design is not as easy as it may sound and there will be many decisions to be made and tried out while problem solving situations within the design. Children will learn to critique their own product while playtesting it and practice patience as they work and rework an idea. The participants will be led through design steps in the progression of game design.
