Out or broken taillights are one of the top reasons for traffic stops today. Traffic stops can have costly, time-consuming and even life-threatening consequences for undocumented residents, people of color and the poor and working classes.
In 2016, Philando Castile was killed by police after being stopped for a broken taillight. The state of Texas recently passed Senate Bill 4, which, despite several injunctions against the bill, still has a high likelihood of resulting in racial discrimination by police. And lastly, traffic fines can be costly, and not showing up in court or paying fines fast enough can have devastating consequences in Texas. For those working hourly or otherwise inflexible jobs, paying a $75 ticket or taking a day of unpaid time off from work to appear in court can have a real economic impact. Fines can quickly and exponentially increase until they cost more than $1,000 per ticket to manage, eventually resulting in a warrant for arrest — with warrant roundups conducted throughout the state to hunt those with unpaid traffic fines.
This event will benefit our community through tangible action, critical Know Your Rights education, and we will work to empower each visitor to the clinic by giving them the opportunity to learn how to change the lights in the future and how to teach others to protect themselves from unnecessary interactions with the police.
